
History
The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 after World War I. It's a nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization.
The American Legion's mission is to support veterans, active-duty military, and their families, while promoting patriotism and national security.
MISSION ELEMENTS

Support veterans: Provide assistance with careers, education, health care, and stable housing

Support active duty: Support active-duty, National Guard, and Reserve personnel

Promote patriotism: Foster patriotism and responsible citizenship

Promote education: Award scholarships and promote quality education and literacy

Prevent suicide: Destigmatize mental health support, offer peer-to-peer resources, and train people in suicide prevention

Provide disaster relief: Help families facing health care emergencies or other crises

Comment on public issues: Publicly comment on issues that impact veterans, the military, and their families
